Grateful Dead’s Donna Jean Godchaux passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer. The talented musician, known for her collaborations with Elvis Presley and Cher, breathed her last on November 2 at a hospice in Nashville. Dennis McNally, a spokesperson for the late artist, described her as a kind and radiant soul, deeply mourned by all who knew her. The family has requested privacy during this period of mourning.

Donna gained fame for her contributions to Grateful Dead’s music from 1971 to 1979, notably on albums like “What a Long Strange Trip It’s Been” and “Wake of the Flood.” Beyond her time with the band, she was part of Keith and Donna Godchaux and Heart of Gold. In 2006, she formed her own band, the Donna Jean Godchaux Band.

Her musical footprint extended beyond Grateful Dead, having lent her vocal talents to Elvis Presley’s iconic track “Suspicious Minds” and Percy Sledge’s “When A Man Loves A Woman.” Donna’s voice also graced songs by renowned artists such as Cher, Neil Diamond, Boz Scaggs, and Duane Allman.

Raised in Alabama, Donna moved to California in the 1960s to pursue her music career, where she met her future husband and bandmate, Keith Godchaux. After marrying in 1970, they welcomed their son, Zion ‘Rock’ Godchaux. Following Keith’s passing in 1980, Donna remarried to bassist David MacKay and relocated to Florence, Alabama, her birthplace, where she recorded music at the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.

Fans have poured out condolences on social media, remembering Donna’s legacy and talent. She is survived by her husband, son Kinsan MacKay, daughter-in-law Molly, son Zion, grandson Delta, sister Gogi Clark, and brother Ivan Thatcher.
