Ibiza Airport Flooded, Spanish Resorts on Alert

-

Extreme weather conditions have caused significant disruptions in a popular British holiday destination, with rain entering Ibiza Airport through its roof. Several well-known Spanish resorts are on high alert due to severe flooding, leading to cars being submerged under water. A red weather alert has been issued for travelers heading to the Balearic party island, anticipating widespread travel disruptions.

Videos circulating on social media depict heavy downpours inside the airport premises, with water pouring onto luggage carousels. Travelers were advised to prepare for torrential rains in Ibiza and Formentera, where the risk of flooding and sudden water surges is high. Spanish weather authorities have cautioned about the extreme weather conditions, with over 180 mm of rainfall expected within twelve hours, posing a risk of flooding and rapid rises in water levels until 16:00 h.

Social media posts have highlighted the challenging situations across the islands, showing motorists navigating through flooded areas. This weather event follows a tragic incident where a young boy lost his life during floods in a popular spot for British tourists in Spain. Heavy rain and flooding have affected various regions in Spain, with the Cataluna area experiencing the worst impact. The body of a boy, aged around 11 or 12, was discovered in the flooded River Anoia near Barcelona, with search efforts ongoing for his father.

Authorities in Catalonia have been conducting search operations to locate the missing father, who may have been swept away by the high floods in the river. The vehicle they were traveling in reportedly continued along a flooded road, prompting rescue teams to intensify their search efforts in the affected areas.
