During the Labour party conference in Liverpool, Ms. Davies-Jones shared her experience of meeting survivors of sexual and domestic violence, describing it as both a privilege and a source of inspiration. She highlighted the need for a collective effort across all government departments, including Education, Health, Housing, and the Department for Work and Pensions, to ensure the safety of women and girls and provide effective protection when incidents occur.
The Minister emphasized the significance of a 10-year strategy focused on not only funding but also instigating cultural change, strong political leadership, and altering public perceptions to garner support for the cause. Specific policies like Raneem’s Law, which involves placing domestic abuse specialists in emergency call centers, and legislation addressing various forms of violence against women were mentioned as part of the comprehensive approach.
In a previous commitment, Keir Starmer pledged to halve violence against women and girls within a decade. Recent data revealed a concerning rate of sexual assaults in England and Wales, with approximately 900,000 individuals aged over 16 experiencing such offenses within a year. The statistics further indicated a high prevalence of domestic abuse, sexual assault, and stalking among women during that period.
Ms. Davies-Jones commended the remarkable women she encountered, expressing how their stories fuel her dedication to enhancing protective measures.
