Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to retaliate following efforts by Western countries, including the UK, to acknowledge Palestinian statehood. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, currently in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, cautioned Israel against expanding settlements in the West Bank in response to this development.
Cooper emphasized that recognizing Palestine was intended to enhance security by preserving the possibility of a two-state solution. On Sunday, the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal took a symbolic step in acknowledging Palestine. Netanyahu, also present at the UN, expressed strong opposition ahead of anticipated additional recognitions at the General Assembly.
Netanyahu firmly stated that a Palestinian state would not be established and warned of consequences upon his return from the United States. He criticized leaders supporting Palestinian statehood, labeling it a reward for terrorism and asserting that a Palestinian state would not exist west of the Jordan River.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to affirm France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood during a high-level conference co-hosted with Saudi Arabia at the UN. Concerns have been raised that Israel may accelerate settlement activities in the West Bank, prompting Cooper to stress the importance of refraining from such actions to ensure security for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Cooper outlined the UK’s intention to advocate for international support for a peace framework in the Middle East at the UN General Assembly. She aims to bolster the international consensus on the pathway for peace in the region.
Furthermore, Cooper will participate in a Security Council meeting focusing on global security threats, particularly Russia’s airspace violations over NATO allies. The UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s security will also be reaffirmed during the Assembly.
In the midst of ongoing global challenges, Cooper highlighted the imperative role of UK diplomacy in addressing conflicts and crises worldwide. She emphasized the need for proactive engagement to promote peace and security abroad, which contributes to the UK’s national priorities across various sectors.
