Ed Williams, known for his role in Naked Gun, has passed away at the age of 98 in Los Angeles. His granddaughter, Stephanie Williams, confirmed his death on October 2. Williams, born Edwin Wallace Williams on November 26, 1926, gained fame for his portrayal of Ted Olson in ABC’s Police Squad. Prior to his move to Los Angeles in 1955, Williams enjoyed a successful career in theater and radio. He later transitioned to teaching speech classes at LA City College before landing the role of Olson in Police Squad!
Reflecting on his career in a 2017 interview with Matthew Worley of the Pacific Pioneer Broadcasters, Williams expressed his satisfaction with returning to acting after a hiatus. Police Squad! premiered in March 1982, followed by The Naked Gun film series. Williams took a hiatus from auditioning for roles for 24 years, disapproving of professors who neglected their classes for side gigs.
Fans have taken to social media to pay tribute to Williams, with many fondly remembering his role as Ted Olson in Police Squad! and The Naked Gun films. Williams’ co-star, Diane Keaton, who passed away at 79, was recently revealed to have died from pneumonia. Keaton’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and suggested donations to her favorite causes in her memory.
Keaton’s health had declined rapidly before her passing, with loved ones and friends keeping her final months private. In a surprising move, Keaton put her home in Brentwood, California, up for sale earlier this year after vowing to stay there forever.
