A British woman detained in an Iranian prison on espionage charges is now receiving medical treatment through a drip as her health continues to worsen.
Lindsay and Craig Foreman, a couple aged 52, were arrested in Iran on January 3 while on a motorcycle journey across the globe from Australia to Armenia, passing through Iran from Pakistan. The pair, residents of East Sussex, were accused of espionage and have been in detention since then, with their family vehemently denying the allegations and advocating for their release and repatriation.
Lindsay is currently held at Qarchak women’s prison near Tehran, separated from her spouse. Their son, Joe Bennett, expressed concerns over his mother’s deteriorating health, noting that she recently required intravenous therapy in her cell.
Human rights organizations have criticized the deplorable conditions at the notorious women’s prison, describing it as a dreadful place. Lindsay shares a cell with 70 other women and sleeps on a bare metal bed without a mattress.
Joe conveyed to The Times that his mother’s health situation is worrying, with her being on a drip, though the reason remains unclear. He emphasized their resilience but stressed the need to address the abnormality of their circumstances.
Meanwhile, Craig reportedly suffers from a tooth abscess while detained in Evin prison, where Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held for nearly six years. Joe highlighted Craig’s health complaints and the lack of adequate dental care, describing the situation as distressing.
The family has been advocating for the release of the British couple, with a meeting scheduled with Yvette Cooper on October 16. Although Craig and Lindsay are expected to appear in court soon, the family anticipates a delayed outcome, possibly extending into the following week.
Despite the distinct differences in the situations, the family found encouragement in the release of another British couple detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Barbie, 76, and Peter Reynolds, 80, who had spent years in Afghanistan, were eventually freed after persistent lobbying by their family.
Reflecting on these events, Lindsay’s son expressed hope for his parents’ release, drawing inspiration from the possibility demonstrated by the Reynolds’ case.
