Zelensky Warns Moscow of Power Retaliation

-

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a warning to Moscow, indicating potential retaliatory actions involving power disruptions in the Russian capital if Russia attempts to disrupt Ukraine’s power supply infrastructure. Ukraine is on high alert for renewed assaults on its power systems ahead of winter, a situation reminiscent of past incidents. Last January, Russia launched significant missile attacks on Ukraine, specifically targeting energy facilities, leading to power grid shutdowns in some regions during sub-zero temperatures. Amid reports suggesting Russia is planning a repeat strategy, Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine would respond in kind to Moscow’s actions.

Zelensky stated, “If the Kremlin threatens a blackout in Ukraine’s capital, they should be aware that a similar blackout could occur in Moscow. It is essential to emphasize the discussions held with the president.” The Ukrainian leader highlighted the distinction between civilized nations and aggressors, stressing that while civilized countries refrain from initiating conflicts, they are not devoid of strength and should not be perceived as weak.

According to Ukrainian media reports, last winter, Russia targeted and disabled eight thermal plants and five hydropower facilities, resulting in widespread blackouts across Ukraine. Following a partial ceasefire in March, Russia shifted its focus to local energy installations in frontline regions. Recent events, including an attack on a thermal power facility in Kyiv Oblast on September 8, leading to regional power outages, indicate a potential escalation. Kremlin sources mentioned in Bloomberg indicated Russian intentions to target energy infrastructure once again.

Despite preparations for potential attacks, Ukraine faces challenges in defending against drone and missile strikes due to inadequate air defenses. Maxim Timchenko, CEO of Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK, highlighted the difficulty in safeguarding sites against Russia’s coordinated attacks. The front line in Ukraine has extended to approximately 800 miles, straining Kyiv’s defenses, with Russian forces employing new tactics involving small assault groups infiltrating Ukrainian lines, as reported by Ukraine’s top military commander.

General Oleksandr Syrskyi disclosed that the contact line has expanded by around 120 miles over the past year, with Ukrainian forces engaging in numerous daily combat encounters with Russia’s larger military. Despite US President Donald Trump’s unsuccessful attempts to broker peace, he expressed optimism in Ukraine’s ability to regain lost territories from Russia, equating to about 20% of its landmass.
