A tragic incident occurred where a baby girl was found deceased on a couch at home while her mother was engaged in a night of revelry without realizing the dire situation. Natasha Birks, the mother, was solely responsible for Rhian Mahoney when she placed the five-month-old on a sofa before indulging in alcohol with a friend on the eve of her birthday. Prosecutors revealed that the 37-year-old mother neglected to monitor the baby adequately.
It was reported that Birks failed to notice that Rhian did not wake up for her feeding during the night. Regrettably, by the time emergency services were contacted, the baby had already passed away. Birks has now been found guilty of child cruelty and is awaiting sentencing in December.
During the incident in the Normacot area of Stoke on Trent in 2021, Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that Birks and her friend consumed significant amounts of alcohol along with other beverages while Rhian was asleep in another room. Birks did not eat anything to counterbalance the effects of the alcohol and left the house multiple times to smoke.
The prosecution argued that Birks only briefly checked on her daughter from a distance throughout the evening instead of performing proper supervision. When Rhian did not wake up for her regular feeding schedule, Birks failed to notice the deviation. Subsequently, she also did not recognize her daughter’s deteriorating health between 6 am and 9 am.
Elaine Radway from the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “Natasha Birks made the decision to consume excessive amounts of alcohol while caring for her five-month-old baby who was completely reliant on her. Though she did not directly cause her child’s death or anticipate such a tragic outcome, her state of intoxication hindered her ability to provide the necessary care for Rhian.”
The law holds parents responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of their children, and this case exemplifies the severe repercussions when parents neglect their essential duty to safeguard vulnerable children. Our sympathies are with all those affected by this heartbreaking situation.
