Wetherspoon has revealed its intention to launch a new pub at a university. The popular pub chain will manage Joe’s at the University of Birmingham through a collaboration with the institution’s Guild of Students. Named after the university’s famous clock tower, Joe’s Bar will be under the continued management of the Guild of Students.
Scheduled for an opening in Easter 2026 after significant renovations, the new venue will offer Wetherspoon’s complete food and beverage menu, including special weekly deals like the Thursday Curry Club. Wetherspoon, known for its extensive network of nearly 800 pubs across the UK, previously inaugurated its first university pub at Hull University in 2022.
John Hutson, the CEO of Wetherspoon, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with the Guild of Students and emphasized the commitment to making Joe’s Bar a thriving establishment. In a statement, Hutson highlighted the prospect of enhancing the student experience through this venture.
The President of the University of Birmingham Guild of Students, Antonia Listrat, also welcomed the collaboration with Wetherspoon, emphasizing the benefits for students, including affordable food and beverages and increased job opportunities within the bar. Listrat highlighted the positive impact that any surplus generated from the partnership would have on supporting student activities and enhancing the overall student community.
In addition to this new venture, Wetherspoon is set to unveil six more pubs by mid-January. Meanwhile, the pub chain recently introduced its Christmas menu featuring a budget-friendly turkey dinner option. The festive menu includes a selection of traditional holiday dishes at slightly higher prices compared to the previous year.
Despite reporting improved sales and profits, Tim Martin, the founder of Wetherspoon, indicated the company’s commitment to minimizing price hikes amidst industry challenges. Martin acknowledged the impact of tax increases on pricing but assured efforts to maintain competitive pricing for consumers. The Christmas menu will be available until the end of December, catering to patrons looking to enjoy a traditional holiday feast.
