A British Airways flight attendant, Haden Pentecost, has been spared a jail sentence after being found under the influence of drugs and naked on a flight. Pentecost, 41, received a suspended six-month prison term and was ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work, along with paying £150 in costs. The incident occurred on a flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow in May, where Pentecost’s behavior caused concern among his colleagues.
Pentecost, who had admitted to being impaired by drugs while performing his duties, exhibited disheveled and erratic behavior before stripping naked on the plane. Colleagues had to assist him and manage the flight without his help. Medical professionals were called in after the captain noticed Pentecost’s dilated pupils and confusion about basic information.
Following a blood test that revealed drugs in his system, Pentecost was dismissed from his job. His defense lawyer stated that Pentecost had consumed drugs in San Francisco to enhance a sexual experience, a decision he regretted due to the consequences it had on his career. The judge acknowledged Pentecost’s remorse and mitigating factors, reducing his sentence and emphasizing the seriousness of his actions.
Judge Hannah Duncan highlighted the importance of cabin crew’s safety role and the impact Pentecost’s behavior had on the passengers and airline staff. Despite the shame and consequences he faced, Pentecost was spared jail time but was urged to address his behavior and not repeat such actions.
