Amazon has set a deadline for older Kindle models, including Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Gen, to lose access to new books starting May 20, 2026. Owners of affected devices will not be able to add or read new content after this date. However, existing libraries will remain accessible, ensuring users retain access to previously purchased books.
The list of devices impacted by this update includes Kindle 1st Generation (2007), Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010), Kindle Keyboard (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011), Kindle 5 (2012), and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation (2012). Amazon stated that these models, supported for over 14 years, will no longer receive content support due to advancements in technology.
To ease the transition, Amazon is offering affected customers a 20 percent discount on selected new Kindle models and a £15 eBook credit. The new Kindle lineup includes standard models and Colorsoft devices with color screens. Additionally, the Scribe range offers digital pens for note-taking, document annotation, and book markup.
While this change may disappoint some Kindle owners, Amazon is providing incentives to upgrade to newer models. Customers are encouraged to explore the latest Kindle options as they prepare for the upcoming content restriction on older devices.
