Shrouded in a mix of smoke and steam and filled with a sense of nostalgia, the Mirror embarked on a journey through time to honor the inception of modern travel. Two centuries have passed since the inaugural public railway, utilizing steam locomotives to transport passengers, made its historic debut. The Mirror team boarded a fully functional replica of Locomotion No.1 to reenact the groundbreaking journey of the Stockton and Darlington Railway on September 27, 1825.
Crafted by the renowned rail innovator George Stephenson of Newcastle, the Locomotion pulled a carriage named “Experiment,” raising some concerns among passengers. Today marks the commencement of a series of events commemorating that pioneering voyage from Shildon, Co Durham to Stockton-on-Tees. An estimated crowd of 100,000 spectators and railway enthusiasts are anticipated to gather for the S&DR 200 festival to witness the Locomotion in operation.
Two hundred years ago, onlookers from various corners of the globe, including South America, Canada, Russia, and India, traveled to witness the 26-mile journey that not only transformed rail travel but also modern society. The ease and affordability of travel facilitated by railways introduced commuting as a viable option for the first time, enabling individuals to reside farther from their workplaces.
The success of the Stockton and Darlington Railway demonstrated the feasibility of steam-powered passenger railways and laid the foundation for the expansion of our rail network. Director Niccy Hallifax of the S&DR festival emphasized, “It changed the way we did everything.” The replica boarding at Shildon’s Locomotion Museum, constructed in 1975 as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations, underwent significant modifications over the past couple of years to enable its operation on the East Coast main line.
Driver Chris “historic Flyer” Cubitt, 78, from Middlesbrough, expressed his honor and pleasure, stating, “Steam is in my blood.” Steve Davies, 66, a former colonel in The Queen’s Lancashire Regiment and project manager of Locomotion No. 1, expressed his pride, highlighting the significance of the anniversary. The celebrations include a test run of the Locomotion mirroring the historical journey of September 26, 1825, culminating in a commemorative event alongside a new Azuma in Darlington, marking 200 years of rail travel side by side.
The Latin motto of Experiment, “Periculum Privatum Utilitas Publica,” translates to “Private Risk for Public Good,” paying homage to the early railway investors. In 1825, the original Locomotion No 1 hauled up to 30 wagons, primarily loaded with coal, at an average speed of 8mph, receiving a 21-gun salute send-off. Although the restored replica will not carry passengers for safety reasons this weekend, the public can line the route for a remarkable spectacle.
