Millions of people in the UK are expected to experience heavy rainfall over the weekend due to the aftermath of Hurricane Gabrielle. Meteorological data from WXCharts indicates that a band of rain will move across Northern Ireland, Scotland, northern England, and parts of Wales. By midday on Saturday, around 5mm of rain is forecasted for Belfast, western coastal areas of Scotland, and surrounding regions.
Later in the day, the rain band will shift westward, bringing about 5mm of rainfall, with up to 2mm falling in the Highlands. By evening, southern and western Scotland, along with parts of southwestern Wales, can expect 5mm of precipitation.
Fortunately, by Sunday, the worst of the rainfall is projected to pass, although some scattered showers may persist across the UK. Meanwhile, Hurricane Gabrielle is approaching the Iberian Peninsula, prompting authorities in the Azores to implement limited shutdowns and issue warnings. Strong winds reaching 65 miles per hour have affected the islands, accompanied by heavy rainfall. The hurricane is anticipated to intensify before reaching Portugal’s coast on Sunday.
The impact of the hurricane will extend as far north as the UK, with the Met Office forecasting persistent rain over Scotland before spreading to England and Wales. The weather agency highlighted that Scotland may experience heavy rain at times, moving eastward across Wales and England, with some sunny spells in the southeast.
Looking ahead to Sunday to Tuesday, the Met Office anticipates outbreaks of rain in southern England, followed by brighter skies and scattered showers. Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday, with showers possible. Overall, relatively settled conditions are foreseen towards the end of the month and early October, with cloudier weather in the northwest and occasional rain showers.
While showers or longer periods of rain may affect all regions, the wettest conditions are likely to concentrate on the northwest of the country, according to the Met Office. Additionally, windier weather conditions are expected predominantly in the northwest.
