Russia’s breach of NATO member countries’ airspace is seen as a potential serious escalation, according to David Lammy. He cautioned Vladimir Putin that the alliance is prepared to protect its territory.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that NATO nations can confront the Russian aggressor and assured that Putin will face a robust response. RAF Typhoons, accompanied by an RAF Voyager aircraft, conducted their inaugural NATO air defense operation over Poland following a recent Russian drone violation.
In response to concerns about the adequacy of the measures taken, Mr. Lammy stated that NATO is actively engaged in addressing the situation. He highlighted the deployment of military assets to support NATO missions on the eastern front and reiterated the seriousness of the breach.
Furthermore, he underscored the collective strength of the 27 NATO countries in deterring Putin’s actions. UK fighter jets participated in their first NATO policing mission over Poland in response to recent airspace violations by Russian drones.
Viewed as a defensive initiative, the UK fighter jets patrolled near Belarusian and Russian airspace without any notable incidents reported. The operation, named “Eastern Sentry,” aimed to safeguard the region’s airspace.
The mission took place following incidents where Russian drones intruded into Polish and Romanian airspace. The situation prompted warnings of potential conflict from the Prime Minister of Poland and reports of Russian jets violating Estonia’s airspace.
UK Defence Secretary John Healey praised the RAF personnel for their commitment to defending shared security with Poland. He commended the successful defense operation against Russian aggression and highlighted the solidarity among Allies within NATO.
Over 400 UK personnel are set to support ongoing NATO patrolling missions in Eastern Europe, emphasizing the strong partnership with the alliance. Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth reiterated the readiness to project airpower effectively within NATO’s framework.
