“Finding Fulfillment in Retirement: Navigating a New Chapter”

-

In my late-60s, I recently retired after selling my business. My wife and I have three children, two of whom are parents themselves. I’m starting to feel somewhat unnecessary in ways I didn’t anticipate.

While my wife, who is younger, works part-time and volunteers, leading a busy life with various social circles and planned trips abroad, I find myself feeling somewhat left out. I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, playing golf occasionally, and working on my old car, but beyond that, I feel adrift.

I wonder if things would be different if my wife also retired, allowing us to spend more time together. However, she remains committed to her work. I’m seeking advice on how to improve my situation and address this sense of being lost.

Retirement represents a significant transition, especially after years of managing a business and caring for others. It may take time to discover new interests and routines. It seems you desire more fulfillment and connection, both in terms of personal activities and shared experiences with your wife.

While it’s wonderful that your wife is active and has a wide social circle, it’s important to communicate your desires for joint activities. Perhaps she assumes you want to relax after years of hard work. Express your feelings to her and discuss activities you’d like to pursue together, whether it involves travel or local adventures. Embrace this phase of life and explore different opportunities to find what brings you joy.

If you’re looking for inspiration, consider exploring groups like u3a.org.uk, which offers learning opportunities and chances to meet like-minded individuals. This period in your life can be fulfilling, and it’s about experimenting with new experiences and determining what resonates with you.
