The two-time Olympic champion had been sidelined following surgery earlier in the year to address scar tissue around his left Achilles tendon. In a dramatic finish, Ingebrigtsen surged past Florian Bremm of Germany in the final 50 meters to secure victory in a time of 13 minutes and 15.29 seconds, with Bremm finishing in second place and Etienne Daguinos of France in third.
Reflecting on his win, Ingebrigtsen expressed his disbelief at reclaiming the European title after facing challenging times. His competitors praised his exceptional performance, with Daguinos referring to him as a “legend of our sport” and Bremm acknowledging Ingebrigtsen’s superior speed even after recovering from injury. Ingebrigtsen, who opted not to compete in the 1,500 meters, has previously dominated both the 1,500 and 5,000 events at the European championships.
Last year’s Achilles issue had impacted Ingebrigtsen’s performance at the world championships in Tokyo, where he faced setbacks in the 1,500 meters and finished 10th in the 5,000 final. With his seventh individual European gold, Ingebrigtsen further solidified his status as the most successful male athlete in the history of the continental championship.
In another event, British sprinter Amy Hunt narrowly claimed victory in the women’s 100 meters, crossing the line ahead of Poland’s Ewa Swoboda and Belgium’s Delphine Nkansa. Meanwhile, Dutch athlete Jessica Schilder secured a hat-trick of wins in the shot put, showcasing her dominance with a gold-medal throw of 20.73 meters. Schilder’s remarkable achievement adds to her previous successes at the European championships and other prestigious competitions.
The championships also saw Leonardo Fabbri successfully defend his men’s shot put title, with teammates Jessica Schilder and Zane Weir earning silver medals in their respective events.
