Liberal MP Shaun Chen has announced his decision to step down from his position at the end of this week due to ongoing health issues resulting from a car accident he was involved in late last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen revealed that the accident left him with severe health complications, hindering his ability to fulfill his parliamentary duties by traveling to Ottawa regularly.
After careful consideration with his family, Chen shared his resignation plans through a social media statement on Monday, emphasizing the necessity for him to resign as a Member of Parliament. Previously serving as the chair of the Toronto District School Board, Chen’s departure marks another loss in the political landscape this summer.
Prime Minister Mark Carney conveyed his appreciation for Chen’s dedication to advocating for youth and fighting against racism in a statement, expressing well wishes for a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors. Chen’s resignation follows a series of other MPs stepping down, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall, with plans for Conservative MP Larry Brock and NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice to depart later in the year.
Chen has set Saturday as the date for his resignation from office.
