Jay Cory, a farmer and chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), emphasized the importance of research in sparking new ideas and strategies for farmers. LARA, a non-profit organization serving northeastern Alberta, conducts agricultural studies at its Fort Kent research field, situated approximately 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton.
Local producers recently visited the facility to explore the ongoing trials, which focus on enhancing productivity and sustainability through research on crop varieties and farming practices. Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist at LARA, highlighted the organization’s commitment to testing ideas under real-world conditions, considering factors like precipitation and temperature fluctuations.
The research at LARA is driven by questions and feedback from local farmers, with the primary objective being to help growers achieve more sustainable and productive crops. This year’s trials face challenges posed by excessively wet weather conditions, providing valuable insights into crop performance under unexpected growing conditions.
