“April Reign Criticizes Lack of Diversity at Emmys”

-

In 2015, social activist and writer April Reign introduced the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag. She now reveals that she avoids watching award shows live, with the recent Emmys serving as an example. The Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast on Monday highlighted a lack of diversity among the winners, as white performers dominated all 10 major acting categories, leaving actors of color without recognition.

April Reign expressed her views, stating that the current situation is not a step backward but rather a standstill in terms of diversity representation. The absence of actors of color in the major acting categories raised concerns, leading to the trending hashtag #EmmysSoWhite on social media the following day.

Reign emphasized that the issue goes beyond a single event, highlighting it as a recurring pattern within the industry. Despite some efforts to address diversity gaps in recent years, the results of Monday’s Emmys underscored persistent challenges in representation.

The transparency report released by the Television Academy earlier this year revealed that the majority of its members in 2026 were white. However, the academy noted an increase in membership diversity among various groups, including biracial individuals, East Asian, Southeast Asian, women, non-binary, transgender, and intersex voters.

April Reign stressed the importance of addressing representation issues throughout the industry, not just during award season. She emphasized the need to consider diversity in decision-making processes from the early stages of production, including casting and storytelling choices.

While actors of color faced a shutout during the primetime broadcast, Hiro Murai made history by becoming the first Asian filmmaker to win the best directing award for a comedy series at the Emmys. The industry’s representation trends have fluctuated over the years, with varying levels of diversity among winners in recent ceremonies.

The ongoing discussions around diversity and inclusion in the entertainment industry highlight the need for continuous efforts to promote representation and address systemic challenges.
