Stephen Colbert made a triumphant return to late-night television as a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” following his recent Emmy win. This marked his first appearance since CBS axed his show earlier this year. Colbert received a warm welcome from the audience, with Kimmel humorously likening his return to a shark going back to familiar waters.
During the interview, Kimmel mentioned Colbert’s apparent contentment away from the daily news grind, with Colbert sharing that he no longer felt the need to engage with the intense news cycle. The conversation steered clear of extensive political commentary, allowing Colbert to showcase a more relaxed and lighthearted side to his personality.
The banter between the two hosts included reminiscing about past Emmy celebrations and culminated in a comedic moment where Kimmel offered to shave off Colbert’s beard on air, a gesture Colbert accepted. Additionally, Colbert shared details about his upcoming film project, “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past,” which he is co-writing with his son and Philippa Boyens.
In a light-hearted gesture, Colbert gifted Kimmel a prop shield from “Captain America” before wrapping up the interview. With Colbert now enjoying a hiatus from nightly hosting duties, he expressed a sense of freedom and hinted at his newfound leisure to pursue personal interests and travel.
The decision to cancel “The Late Show” by CBS was officially attributed to financial considerations, although skepticism arose due to the timing following Colbert’s public criticism of the parent company’s settlement with former President Trump. Despite the show’s cancellation, Colbert’s return to the late-night scene was met with enthusiasm and showcased his enduring appeal to viewers.
