“Fernie Breaks Ground on State-of-the-Art Fire Hall”

-

Fernie initiates the construction of a specialized fire hall to provide a safer working environment for firefighters and enhance response times. A groundbreaking event took place at 1500 5th Ave., situated within Prentice Park. The new facility is expected to be operational by fall 2027.

Currently, Fernie firefighters operate from temporary locations at the public works yard, resulting in delays in response times. Fire chief Brendan Morgan highlighted the inefficiencies and emphasized that the new fire hall will offer more space for vehicles, improved training facilities, and designated areas to separate contaminated gear from clean zones.

The upgraded facility will include provisions for an emergency operations center to aid in planning during emergencies like wildfires. The decision to construct the fire hall at Prentice Park followed extensive deliberations to cater to Fernie’s evolving emergency requirements as the community expands and wildfire threats persist.

Despite some opposition regarding the chosen location, Mayor Nic Milligan defended the decision, citing the site’s suitability in terms of size, accessibility, and meeting the operational needs of firefighters. The city secured $7 million in funding through the Strategic Priorities Fund to support the construction, alleviating the financial burden on local taxpayers.

Although the new fire hall will not immediately result in additional career firefighters, it will equip the department to adapt to Fernie’s growth and changing community dynamics. The project signifies a significant step towards enhancing emergency response capabilities in Fernie.
