“Cineplex Considers Sale with New CEO Walker”

-

Cineplex has disclosed the possibility of a sale as it introduced Bill Walker, the former head of Landmark Cinemas, as its new CEO. The company’s board, while expressing confidence in its future, is exploring various options to enhance shareholder value through a Strategic Review process.

The appointment memo stated that the Board has initiated a comprehensive evaluation to identify opportunities for maximizing shareholder value. This review may include exploring the potential sale of the company among other alternatives. Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been enlisted as co-financial advisors for this strategic assessment.

Cineplex, known as the largest cinema chain in Canada, currently operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide, employing more than 10,000 individuals across its entertainment venues. In 2019, Cineplex underwent a failed $2.8-billion acquisition by the U.K.-based Cineworld Group PLC.

During this strategic review, former CEO Ellis Jacob will support the board as a special adviser. Chair of the board, Phyllis Yaffe, highlighted Cineplex’s strong market position and portfolio of leading entertainment assets, expressing the belief that the company’s current market valuation may not fully reflect its business strength and long-term potential.

Bill Walker, with prior experience leading Landmark Cinemas, Canada’s second-largest theater exhibitor, and overseeing its sale to Kinepolis in 2017, emphasized his support for the strategic review. He emphasized a commitment to operational excellence, exceptional guest experiences, and generating superior outcomes for shareholders regardless of the review’s conclusion.
