American Climber Mallory Geis Found Dead on Broad Peak

-

Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was the final missing member of a 10-person international mountaineering group that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was confirmed by a mountaineering official and local authorities. Geis’s remains were discovered by a team of local volunteers, as reported by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s first endeavor to summit an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Residing in San Antonio, Texas, Geis, aged 39, had announced on social media earlier this year her decision to shut down her Pilates studio and embark on a new journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a radiant presence deeply cherished by her loved ones. The search for Geis began on July 31 following the tragic avalanche on Broad Peak that engulfed the expedition led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja.

Nirmal Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a Nepali climber and former British Army soldier, gained fame for climbing the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record 189 days in 2019, a feat documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” Unfortunately, Purja’s record was surpassed in 2023. Climbing accidents are frequent in the northern regions of Pakistan due to hazards like avalanches, falling ice and rocks, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
