Belgium is grappling with one of its largest wildfires as firefighters battle the blaze, which has been fueled by the hot and dry conditions of Europe’s summer. The fire, located in the eastern High Fens region near the German border, has scorched approximately 30 square kilometers of land, leaving charred trees and smoldering ground in its wake.
Despite more favorable winds preventing significant growth, the wildfire remains uncontrolled in parts inaccessible to ground crews, as confirmed by regional authorities. Aid from countries like Norway, Sweden, Germany, and the Netherlands, along with local police drones, have supported the efforts of 500 firefighters combating the blaze.
A forest ranger mentioned that due to the peaty soil, the fire could persist underground for months, with the potential to flare up intermittently. Although recent rainfall helped contain the fire to some extent, there are concerns about ongoing smoldering and potential reignition.
In Greece, a wildfire near Athens’ main airport was quickly extinguished, while in France, a fire in the Landes region has been brought under control, allowing evacuated residents to return home. The French government has pledged financial aid to support the affected regions in rebuilding efforts.
Additionally, Croatia has reported suspected cases of arson, with four individuals under investigation for starting multiple fires in the Zadar area. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to assess the extent of the damage caused.
Tourists have evacuated the affected areas, and precautionary evacuation orders remain in place for residents as the region continues to grapple with the aftermath of the wildfires.
