A 55-year-old British tourist who went missing while hiking on the Greek island of Karpathos has been discovered deceased. The man disappeared over a month ago during his first solo trip to the island and was located on Saturday in the secluded area of Epionia in the northern part of Karpathos.
The last confirmed sighting of the man was when he was seen taking photos with his phone in Diafani fishing village back in June. A local witness mentioned that the tourist had inquired about directions to Vroukounda via the Lahamitis path.
Upon the man not returning to his pre-booked accommodation, emergency services were alerted. Firefighters, police, and coast guard, along with drones, sniffer dogs, and volunteers, extensively searched the area but could not locate him.
The man’s remains will be transported to the nearby island of Rhodes for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
In a separate incident earlier this month, another British traveler’s death was reported by the Mirror. The 57-year-old man passed away at Prasonisi, Rhodes, after being found unresponsive in the water around midday on Sunday, September 7. Despite efforts by paramedics at the Gennadi Health Centre, he could not be revived and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Authorities from the Lindos Port Authority have initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death, with an autopsy scheduled to ascertain the precise cause.
