“Canadian Astronaut Launches Innovative Blood Testing Tech to Combat Health Risks in Space”

-

Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutyrk is set to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on October 1, carrying advanced Canadian technology. Living in space poses health risks due to the effects of low gravity on the human body, including the potential for dangerous blood clots. NASA is focused on ensuring the safety of astronauts in space, particularly in monitoring and addressing the risk of blood clots.

To address this concern, NASA has collaborated with Vancouver-based Response Biomedical to introduce innovative technology. One key device, known as Acute Care Testing in Space (ACTIS), utilizes the company’s existing RAMP technology to measure D-dimer levels in the blood, a crucial indicator for medical professionals both in space and on the ground. This technology not only detects blood clots but can also identify other medical conditions such as heart attacks, COVID-19, and RSV.

The efficient blood testing offered by ACTIS provides quick results within minutes, enhancing medical care for astronauts and potentially benefiting people in remote communities on Earth. Response Biomedical’s CEO emphasized the importance of rapid and reliable testing, highlighting the versatility of their Canadian-developed platform. The potential success of ACTIS on the International Space Station could pave the way for its utilization in future space missions, aligning with NASA’s ambitions for human space exploration.

Both NASA and Canadian Space Agency officials expressed pride in the selection of ACTIS for the ISS, emphasizing the value and adaptability of Canadian technology in advancing space research and healthcare solutions.
