“Eland Cables Implements Early Pay Rise, Boosting Staff Morale”

-

An employer has made the decision to implement a pay increase for its employees earlier than planned, with workers expressing gratitude for the additional income ahead of the holiday season.

The Real Living Wage, a voluntary pay standard for workers aged 18 and above, is linked to employers who are affiliated with the Living Wage Foundation. This wage is calculated based on the essential costs of living, including expenses like food, clothing, and household bills.

The hourly rate for the Real Living Wage will see an increase of 85p to £13.45 per hour, marking a 6.7% rise, and a 95p increase to £14.80 per hour in London, reflecting a 6.9% uptick. These rates surpass the minimum wage requirements.

Applicable to all employees aged 18 and over at Real Living Wage-certified companies, which now number over 16,000, the pay boost is expected to be fully implemented by May 2026. However, Eland Cables, a supplier of electrical cables for major infrastructure projects, has already rolled out the wage increase ahead of schedule.

Ben, a 34-year-old father of two from Doncaster employed at Eland Cables, is among the many staff members benefiting from the early wage rise. Expressing his appreciation, Ben highlighted the positive impact the extra income will have on covering living expenses, especially with Christmas approaching.

Eland Cables’ executive director, JS Pelland, emphasized that the decision to adopt the new Real Living Wage early is rooted in principles of fairness, loyalty, and long-term prosperity. Pelland stressed the importance of treating employees well, leading to higher engagement, pride in work, and improved outcomes for all involved.

Notably, half of Eland Cables’ workforce consists of essential operational staff, such as cable handlers, forklift drivers, and maintenance personnel, many of whom reside locally in Doncaster. By prioritizing fair pay and employee well-being, Eland Cables has seen a significant increase in staff retention, reduced sick leave, and enhanced productivity.

Moreover, the company actively supports internal career progression, with stories like a former site cleaner ascending to the role of shift manager, illustrating opportunities for growth within the organization. Pelland underscored the positive impact of fostering a committed workforce, emphasizing the importance of unity, quality, and trust in their industry.
