“Experts Warn of Rising Conflict Risk with Russia”

-

Tensions between Russia and western Europe have escalated, leading experts to warn that a conflict may be on the horizon if decisive actions are not taken to deter Russian aggression. Estonian defense minister Hanno Pevkur highlighted Moscow’s recent hybrid attacks, indicating a strategic move to divert NATO’s attention from supporting Ukraine. Keir Giles from Chatham House emphasized the necessity for European nations to enhance their readiness as a collective entity in the face of potential confrontation with Russia.

Expressing concerns, Giles stated, “The likelihood of a kinetic war with Russia is growing due to the lack of preventative measures being implemented.” He cautioned that Russia’s current lack of deterrents against challenging Western powers, especially in the absence of U.S. involvement, could embolden further aggression. Additionally, the inadequacy of responses to recent incidents, such as Poland’s limited defense against Russian drone attacks, underscored the need for more effective strategies.

Former Estonian deputy defense minister Lauri Almann stressed the importance of projecting strength to avert full-scale conflict, noting that Russia respects resolve and robustness. Author Mark Galeotti cautioned against Moscow’s risky decision-making, highlighting the escalating risks associated with aggressive behavior. He emphasized the significance of credible deterrence in dealing with Russia’s provocations and maintaining stability.

Estonia’s defense minister raised alarm over Russia’s hybrid tactics, including airspace violations, cyber intrusions, and disinformation campaigns, aimed at diverting attention from Ukraine. Recent incidents, such as unauthorized MiG-31 fighter jet entries into Estonian airspace, have heightened concerns. The Estonian government is prepared to defend its sovereignty against any potential threats, with a strong stance against Russian provocations.

In response to these provocations, there have been calls for firm action, including intercepting and potentially downing intruding Russian aircraft violating NATO airspace. Estonia remains resolute in protecting its society and deterring aggression. Drawing lessons from Ukraine’s experiences, NATO is urged to enhance precision, speed, and strategic reach to effectively counter Russian threats.
