“Food Blogger Fights Back Against AI-Generated Summaries”

-

Deb Perelman has witnessed significant transformations online. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer, the renowned food blogger’s website, Smitten Kitchen, has evolved with the times. Embracing various social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, Perelman’s focus remained on directing readers back to her website’s recipes and narratives. However, a new obstacle has emerged: AI-generated summaries.

Expressing her astonishment, Perelman highlighted instances where her recipes were summarized by AI without her consent, impacting her website’s traffic. In response, she is advocating for measures to limit AI’s reach on her site. Google recently introduced “AI Mode,” a feature that engages users in conversation similar to AI chatbots, transforming the search experience for over a billion monthly users.

Google’s shift towards prioritizing AI-generated summaries over website links has led to a scenario where users can obtain answers without visiting external websites. This trend of catering to AI bots poses challenges for content creators reliant on human traffic. The internet landscape is adapting to accommodate bots that extract information from websites.

The decline in human web traffic has been notable across various sectors, as per Cloudflare data. Hamzah Khadim, co-founder of Logik Digital, emphasized the shift from keyword-based to conversational searches, highlighting the importance of being part of AI responses rather than just appearing in search results. In response, Logik Digital has transitioned towards Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to enhance websites’ visibility to AI algorithms.

While many content creators monetize through social media, websites often rely on ads or subscriptions for revenue. The influx of AI bots raises concerns about the sustainability of independent content creation. Mark Surman from Mozilla raised questions about the future of content creation and the potential dominance of AI-generated content.

Accessing web content through AI bots incurs costs for websites, as demonstrated by Wikipedia’s experience. Lane Becker from Wikimedia Enterprise highlighted the financial implications of AI bots accessing server infrastructure. To mitigate costs, Wikimedia Enterprise has established agreements with AI companies to compensate for direct access to Wikipedia’s data.

As web traffic continues to shift, media companies like Reddit are contemplating altering their relationship with Google to mitigate declining traffic. Despite these challenges, efforts are underway to preserve the internet’s openness and diverse voices. Perelman emphasized the unique perspective that creators offer, underscoring the importance of context in recipes that AI summaries may overlook.
