“Google’s USB Kit Revives Aging Laptops with ChromeOS Flex”

-

Nearly half a year has passed since Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 10. Consequently, numerous laptops are now missing crucial security updates, making them more vulnerable to potential cyber threats and malware that can compromise data. While some recent models can smoothly transition to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update service, many older PCs do not meet the necessary specifications, leaving users facing a challenging dilemma.

Users have a few options: persist with using unsupported laptops, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in new devices that come preloaded with Windows 11.

For those unenthusiastic about the aforementioned choices, there is now an additional solution for aging PCs to prolong their lifespan and prevent them from becoming e-waste. Google has recently partnered with refurbished electronics vendor Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex serves as a lightweight operating system compatible with numerous older computers, effectively converting them into Chromebook-style devices. Once installed, users can access various services such as Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop.

Although ChromeOS Flex has always been available as a free download from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The kits have been in high demand, with enthusiasts eager to obtain one, causing them to currently be out of stock.

Google stated in a blog post, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, putting those computers at risk of obsolescence. This left many people with a difficult decision: spend hundreds on a new device, or continue using an insecure, outdated one.

“To offer another solution, Google is partnering with Back Market, a leader in refurbished electronics. Starting today, a new ChromeOS Flex USB Kit is available on their site to help you install our fast, secure and free operating system to modernise the PC or Mac you already own.”

The kit is priced around £3, and the USB stick is reusable, contributing to further reduction of electronic waste. Despite the affordable cost, demand is high, as Back Market has reported the item as currently out of stock.

In addition to rejuvenating old laptops, Google highlighted that ChromeOS Flex could have positive environmental impacts. “The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint,” Google mentioned.

“ChromeOS Flex allows the already-manufactured device to be used for longer, which keeps hardware out of landfills and avoids the emissions of making a new device. Savings do not stop there, ChromeOS also consumes 19% less energy on average than other comparable systems.”
