“Hawk Fire Threatens Reno, Forces 90,000 to Flee”

-

A rapidly spreading wildfire in northwest Reno, Nevada, destroyed homes on Sunday, challenging firefighters as shifting winds hindered their efforts. Authorities issued evacuation orders for around 90,000 individuals. The fire, known as the Hawk Fire, started on Saturday and quickly expanded to over 60 square kilometers in the Peavine Peak area of the Humboldt–Toiyabe National Forest.

Officials reported that six individuals, including three first responders and three civilians, sustained injuries. The cause of the fire was determined to be “human-caused,” although specifics on whether it was intentional or accidental were not disclosed.

Approximately 42,000 residents were mandated to evacuate as the evacuation zone expanded towards the University of Nevada, with an additional 45,000 people in an adjacent warning zone. Urging residents to leave immediately, authorities emphasized the unpredictability of the fire due to expected winds.

Cari Kieffer, a resident who lost her home in the fire, recounted the devastating experience of fleeing with her family as the flames approached. The family managed to save their pets and a few belongings before their house was engulfed in flames.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and mobilized the Nevada National Guard to assist in firefighting efforts. Nearly 10,000 customers were without power, and parts of U.S. Route 395 were closed due to the fire.

Emergency officials opened evacuation centers in Reno, while casinos offered discounts to evacuees. The fire, fueled by dry weather conditions, posed a significant threat, leading to multiple evacuations and displacements in the region.
