“Scientists Win Nobel Prize for Optogenetics Breakthrough”

-

Three scientists, Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel, were awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their advancements in light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, as announced by the award-giving body in Stockholm. Optogenetics enables the manipulation of individual nerve cell activity in a live brain, a breakthrough with widespread application in neuroscience research globally.

The laureates, Deisseroth from the U.S., Hegemann and Nagel from Germany, expressed their surprise and gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the honor of sharing the prize with their esteemed colleagues. The Nobel Prize, accompanied by a monetary award of 12 million Swedish crowns, will be divided among the three scientists, who are affiliated with prestigious academic institutions in different countries.

According to Anna Wedell, a genetics professor and Nobel committee member, optogenetics marks the beginning of a new era in neuroscience, allowing for a deeper understanding of brain functions and neural interactions. Clinical trials have shown promising results in restoring vision for individuals suffering from retinitis pigmentosa by incorporating light-sensitive proteins into the retina. Furthermore, the potential applications of optogenetics extend to enhancing cochlear implants for more precise stimulation of the auditory nerve compared to existing technologies.

The groundbreaking research behind optogenetics began with Hegemann’s investigation of light reactions in Chlamydomonas algae in the early 1990s. This led to the discovery of channelrhodopsin-2, an ion channel responsive to light exposure. Subsequent studies by Deisseroth in rat nerve cells solidified the technique, which was formally termed optogenetics in 2006.

The Nobel Prizes, established by Alfred Nobel, recognize individuals who have made significant contributions benefiting humanity. Nobel’s diverse interests and linguistic abilities shaped the five original prize categories, reflecting his multifaceted personality beyond his renowned invention of dynamite. The Nobel laureates will receive their awards on December 10, commemorating the anniversary of Nobel’s passing.
