‘Jess’s Rule’ Mandates Timely Diagnoses After Tragic Cancer Death

-

A recent development known as ‘Jess’s Rule’ has been introduced following the unfortunate passing of Jessica Brady at the age of 27 due to cancer, which went undiagnosed despite multiple GP appointments. Jessica, from Stevenage, tragically succumbed to stage 4 cancer after her symptoms were repeatedly overlooked by medical professionals over the course of 20 consultations.

Despite seeking medical help for six months, Jessica’s concerns were dismissed, attributing her symptoms to Long Covid and her age. Only after a private referral, funded by her mother, was she diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a cancer that had aggressively spread to various parts of her body.

In response to this case, the NHS has launched ‘Jess’s Rule,’ urging doctors to reassess cases where a diagnosis has not been reached after three appointments or if symptoms worsen. Physicians are now mandated to take a “three strikes and rethink” approach, including conducting physical examinations, ordering further tests, seeking second opinions, and making specialist referrals if needed.

Jessica’s mother, reflecting on her daughter’s ordeal, emphasized the importance of advocating for timely diagnoses to prevent similar tragedies. Health Secretary Wes Streeting acknowledged the preventable nature of Jessica’s death and praised her family’s relentless efforts to push for improved patient safety through ‘Jess’s Rule,’ aiming to ensure comprehensive and compassionate care for all patients while supporting healthcare providers in identifying serious illnesses promptly.
