Son Forgives Mother’s Killer, Pleads to Halt Execution

-

The individual who killed a woman was forgiven by her son, who made an emotional plea to halt the execution. Geoffrey West, aged 21 at the time, fatally shot Margaret Parrish Berry, 33, during a robbery at an Alabama gas station on March 28, 1997. Despite expressing remorse for his actions, West faces execution by nitrogen gas in Alabama.

Will Berry, who was 11 when his mother was killed, has corresponded with West and offered forgiveness. The two have expressed a desire to meet, but their request was denied by prison officials. Berry has publicly stated his opposition to the death penalty, a practice still in place in 27 U.S. states, including Alabama.

Prosecutors revealed that Berry was murdered to eliminate witnesses to the robbery. West, now 50, acknowledges his role in the crime and regrets his actions, recalling the moment with deep remorse. Despite Berry’s forgiveness and plea for clemency, Governor Kay Ivey cited Alabama law that mandates death for severe crimes.

A spokesperson for Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall emphasized the severity of the crime and the long duration West has spent on death row. The imminent execution has sparked a debate on the efficacy and morality of the death penalty.
