Maltesers have settled the long-standing debate on the proper way to enjoy the cherished chocolate treat. A recent survey unveiled that more than half of Maltesers fans prefer to savor the treat by sucking it without chewing, while a quarter opt to nibble off the chocolate coating before indulging in the center, and another quarter prefer to bite the sweet in half and consume each portion separately.
Nevertheless, the brand’s scientists have criticized these methods and disclosed that the chocolate is specifically designed to be eaten in a particular way to heighten its flavor and offer a complete multi-sensory experience.
Megan Rushman, the brand’s associate product development scientist, explained that the malted interior serves a dual purpose. It not only provides the signature satisfying crunch but also aids in breaking down the chocolate, preventing the sticky, hard-to-clean sensation that can sometimes occur in the mouth from solid chocolate.
To fully savor the flavor, Megan suggests putting the entire Malteser in your mouth before biting down. This approach ensures that the chocolate covers a significant portion of your palate, creating a multi-sensory experience by stimulating both taste receptors and the sense of hearing with its distinctive crunch.
This revelation coincides with the launch of Maltesers’ new white chocolate variant. Megan added, “It’s the distinctive texture and harmony between the chocolate and the malt center that makes this sweet treat so iconic and beloved by many.”
A survey of 2,000 Maltesers enthusiasts found that those who deviate from the ‘official’ advice by sucking on the ball do so because they enjoy how the malt dissolves in their mouth. Another 23 percent prefer this method to prolong the experience.
Individuals who prefer to nibble stated that they enjoy the dual bursts of flavor from their method, while 24 percent simply like to savor the treat at their own pace. On average, respondents believe that taking 22 seconds to relish the taste is ideal.
While 53 percent insist that room temperature is optimal, 31 percent prefer them chilled straight from the fridge.
Fans also identified the best time to enjoy Maltesers as between 7 PM and 9 PM – preferably while watching TV (57 percent) or as a post-dinner indulgence (20 percent).
Kate Lawler and Boj also contributed to the discussion by sharing their perspectives on the best way to enjoy Maltesers through playful banter. Kate mentioned, “As a nation, we love a food debate, and it’s no different in my house. Boj insists on nibbling the outside, while I prefer to pop one in and give it a crunch. Science might support my approach, but honestly, whether you nibble, melt, or enjoy them in one go, figuring it out is all part of the fun.”
