Man Crushed in Garbage Truck Tragedy

-

A man tragically lost his life when the garbage bin he had entered was emptied into a truck. The incident occurred in Chester, where Vitalij Maceljuch, a 36-year-old Czech national originally from Ukraine, had climbed inside the bin, possibly falling asleep. Despite a check that involved shaking the bin, it was emptied into a Biffa lorry, resulting in Vitalij being crushed.

The discovery of his body on a conveyor belt at the Thorncliffe waste management site in Flintshire led to a police investigation. It was initially mistaken for a mannequin by staff before the grim truth was revealed at the Ruthin Coroner’s Court. Assistant coroner David Lewis mentioned Vitalij’s drug history in North Wales and Cheshire, with traces of cannabis and amphetamine found in his system.

Home Office pathologist Dr. Jonathan Medcalf suggested that the substances in Vitalij’s body might have affected him at the time of his death, pointing to severe head and neck injuries. The Health and Safety Executive highlighted the presence of a “danger of death” sign on the bin. CCTV footage showed Vitalij entering the bin at 4 am.

Despite the tragedy, investigations found no fault with the driver or the waste companies involved. The coroner ruled the death as a misadventure, stating that Vitalij likely died at the site before his body was discovered. The incident was described as an unintentional consequence of intentional actions.

This incident draws parallels to the case of RAF airman Corrie McKeague, who went missing in 2016. Corrie, originally from Scotland and stationed near Bury St Edmunds, was last seen before a theory emerged that he might have crawled into a recycling bin to sleep, leading to a fatal accident with a refuse truck.
