As the water levels in the Danube River drop due to the scorching heat and drought in Europe this summer, Nazi German warships sunk during World War II have resurfaced. The extreme weather conditions are part of the fifth heat wave since May, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius in parts of Spain, France, and Italy. The Copernicus climate monitoring service confirmed that June and July were the hottest on record in western Europe, leading to an estimated 25,000 heat-related deaths.
The rising temperatures have also fueled devastating wildfires and caused record-low water levels in important waterways such as the Danube. Climate scientists warn that these events are clear indicators of the worsening impact of fossil fuel-driven climate change on heatwaves, droughts, wildfires, agriculture, shipping, and energy systems across Europe.
Historians believe that up to 200 Nazi warships were scuttled near the Serbian city of Prahovo in 1944 to impede Soviet forces. Currently, residents have spotted around a dozen wrecks, including a German military motorcycle in Hungary, an unexploded British bomb in Slovakia, and possible ancient mammoth remains in Bulgaria due to the receding Danube waters.
The low water levels in the Danube have raised significant concerns for countries along its route, with Romania restricting water usage for crop irrigation and taking measures to ensure the operation of its nuclear power plant. Hungary had to curtail power use and restart a turbine at its nuclear station due to insufficient cooling water flow.
Experts emphasize that climate change is exacerbating heat extremes and droughts, leading to a reinforcement of these conditions. They predict that next year could bring even higher global temperatures, especially with the potential emergence of a “super El Niño.” This, combined with ongoing greenhouse gas emissions, could result in unprecedented climate impacts if not addressed promptly.
The visible emergence of sunken warships in the Danube serves as a clear example of the escalating effects of climate change, with the drying river revealing historical artifacts and highlighting the urgent need for better environmental stewardship.
