Shaun Murphy Slams Matchroom Over Tournament Scheduling

-

Professional snooker player Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom for the scheduling of the Champion of Champions event. Murphy, who recently participated in the China International Championship quarter-finals, was unexpectedly placed in the opening match of the tournament against Lei Peifan, resulting in a 4-1 defeat. The 43-year-old vented his frustration, criticizing the lack of communication and accusing Matchroom of disrespecting him by disclosing his match schedule while he was returning from China.

Murphy’s frustration stemmed from the fact that other players, such as Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not compete in the International Championship, were scheduled to play in the Champion of Champions on later days, unlike him.

In response to Murphy’s outburst, Matchroom released a statement acknowledging his concerns and emphasizing their commitment to transparency and fairness in the tournament’s organization. They assured that they would consider the feedback to enhance future scheduling practices.

On the tournament’s opening day, World No. 1 Judd Trump secured a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu, advancing to face Lei in the evening session. The following day’s matches include Kyren Wilson vs Jack Lisowski, Mark Allen vs Ziao Xintong, Mark Williams vs Alfie Burden, Mark Selby vs Stephen Maguire, Neil Robertson vs Tom Ford, and John Higgins vs Xiao Guodong.
