Jannik Sinner, the current top-ranked men’s tennis player in the world, has pulled out of the Cincinnati Open due to a knee injury. Sinner, who last played at Wimbledon where he secured his second consecutive title, also opted out of the National Bank Open in Montreal last week. The 24-year-old Italian, holding five Grand Slam victories, is only missing a French Open win to achieve a career Grand Slam.
In a statement relayed by tournament officials, Sinner explained his withdrawal from the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati after consulting with his medical team about his troublesome right knee. Despite extensive efforts with his doctors, Sinner acknowledged that he is not yet fit to compete and expressed his disappointment at missing the Cincinnati tournament while focusing on preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open.
Following Sinner’s decision, Carlos Alcaraz also announced his withdrawal from the Cincinnati Open due to a persistent wrist injury. Consequently, fans in Cincinnati will be deprived of watching the top two men’s singles players in action at the tournament.
Notably, Sinner had clinched the Cincinnati title two years ago, using it as a stepping stone to his subsequent U.S. Open victory. However, Alcaraz, last year’s U.S. Open champion after defeating Sinner in a four-set final, is gearing up to defend his title when the tournament’s main draw commences on August 30.
