“UK Shoe Retailer Robin Elt to Close Historic Worcester Store”

-

One of the UK’s longstanding shoe retailers is set to close a high street store after providing service for 153 years. Robin Elt Shoes, established in Worcester in 1872, will cease operations at its location on January 10, 2026. However, the brand’s other stores in Hereford, Ludlow, Malvern, Leominster, and Totnes will continue to operate as usual.

Jenny Elt, the managing director, expressed deep sadness over the closure of the family-owned business, citing financial challenges as the reason. She acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating that the store was no longer sustainable for the future. Elt emphasized the impossibility of generating funds out of thin air.

In response to the closure, a spokesperson for Worcester City Council highlighted the broader trend of online shopping impacting city centers. Efforts have been made in collaboration with Worcestershire County Council, Worcester BID, and other stakeholders to support local traders. Worcester boasts a unique shopping blend of popular high street brands and independent retailers, a model the council is committed to preserving.

Notably, Scope, a charity shop chain, has recently closed three more high street branches in Morden, Torquay, and Washington. This action aligns with the charity’s plan to shut down 77 shops this year due to projected financial challenges. The closures, following a consultation initiated in January, are expected to affect retail staff and volunteers.

Debbie Boylen, Scope’s head of retail, expressed regret over the closures, emphasizing the critical role the shops played in supporting disabled individuals and their families. She confirmed the closure dates for the affected branches and acknowledged the impact on the local communities.

As part of efforts to revitalize the area, Worcester City Council has secured substantial funding, including £4.5 million for public realm improvements in locations like the Shambles. This initiative aims to enhance the attractiveness and accessibility of the city center amidst evolving consumer preferences and market dynamics.
