The labor union representing 4,400 flight attendants at WestJet has officially given a 72-hour strike notice, potentially leading to a strike during the upcoming busy summer travel period. The Canadian Union of Public Employees has highlighted significant differences between the two negotiating parties.
Alia Hussain, chair of the union’s WestJet division, emphasized the need for substantial changes and fair negotiations in a recent press release. Despite the looming strike possibility, Hussain expressed optimism about resolving the issues through continuous bargaining efforts.
In response to the union’s strike notice, WestJet has issued a 72-hour lockout notice, aiming to address the ongoing negotiations. The airline, Canada’s second-largest, is actively engaged in discussions to secure a mutually beneficial agreement.
WestJet’s CEO, Alexis von Hoensbroech, acknowledged the challenges posed by the labor dispute and assured stakeholders of the company’s commitment to mitigating disruptions. While a strike is not guaranteed at this stage, the potential job action could commence early on Sunday if an agreement is not reached.
Passengers potentially affected by the strike have been offered flexibility by WestJet, allowing changes or cancellations for flights scheduled between July 30 and August 4 without penalties. Regional services and code-share flights are expected to operate normally despite the labor dispute.
Both sides have also finalized an agreement outlining procedures for grounding aircraft and ensuring the safe return of cabin crew in the event of a work stoppage. A key point of contention for the union involves unpaid ground duties, contrasting with WestJet’s stance on compensation through a credit hour system rather than an hourly wage.
Experts, such as John Gradek from McGill University, have highlighted the significant financial impact a strike could have on WestJet during peak travel periods. With over 600 daily flights catering to tens of thousands of passengers, the potential strike poses challenges for both the airline and travelers alike.
