An Irish woman shares her shocking cancer diagnosis story, initially mistaken for a muscle strain. Grainne Morgan-O’Rourke, residing in Carrickmacross, Monaghan, discovered her condition following a routine visit for a smear test in August 2022. She had brushed off a stomach pain as a muscle pull after a sudden twist in July.
Following her GP visit, a scan revealed a significant ovarian cyst, leading to more tests and a specialist referral. Despite initial thoughts that it was just a cyst, further examinations unveiled cancer cells within the cyst. Grainne opted for a hysterectomy, learning she had stage 1A clear cell ovarian cancer, a rare but contained form.
After surgery, she underwent precautionary chemotherapy which, though challenging, showed decreasing side effects with each session. Losing her hair to the treatment, Grainne embraced the journey with a positive attitude. She shared her experience to mark World GO Day, emphasizing the importance of early detection and positive thinking for those facing health challenges.
