Nvidia has unveiled an enhanced version of DLSS tailored for PC gamers, promising improved game visuals with minimal impact on performance. While gamers are acquainted with DLSS 4 and its introduction of Multi Frame-Generation in early 2025, Nvidia has now rolled out an upgraded upscaling model aimed at enhancing image reconstruction quality.
The enhancement in visual quality was evident in demonstrations at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show. Notably, in Black Myth Wukong, DLSS 4.5 showcased significantly enhanced particle effects in the distance compared to the less pronounced effects with DLSS 4.
Although initial tests suggest a slight performance tradeoff with DLSS 4.5 compared to its predecessor, the improved visual output justifies adjusting quality settings to Balanced or Performance to regain lost frames. DLSS 4.5 is readily available for gamers to download and test across titles like Battlefield 6 and ARC Raiders.
While most games are yet to integrate support for DLSS 4.5 in their menus, users can manually enable the feature through the Nvidia application. To experience DLSS 4.5 firsthand, users should ensure they have the latest graphics driver installed via the Nvidia application, which should include the new transformer model in the patch notes.
After installation, users can enable experimental features in the ‘Settings’ menu under the ‘About’ tab and access DLSS settings for individual games in the ‘Graphics’ menu. Opting for the ‘Latest Model’ or ‘Model M’ should activate DLSS 4.5, although users should note that this beta version may impact performance in some games, despite offering notable graphical enhancements.
Nvidia also showcased a new version of Multi Frame-Generation at CES, allowing users to generate up to 6x more frames. A dynamic iteration of this technology is set to switch between Frame-Generation modes to meet target frame rates, but it is slated for release later in the spring and will only be compatible with RTX 50 series cards.
Despite potential performance implications, experimenting with DLSS 4.5 in regular gaming sessions is advisable to assess its impact on visual quality. Ultimately, every frame improvement matters in the gaming experience.
