A renowned educator, known as a “superteacher,” has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping a minor. Lee Brumby, 64, received his sentence after being found guilty in August of five sexual offenses involving the same victim. During the sentencing, Brumby remained impassive.
The victim, in a statement read in court, expressed the ongoing impact of the abuse on her life, stating that she lives in constant fear and suffers from night terrors that disrupt her sleep. Judge Richard Conley addressed Brumby directly, highlighting the shock and dismay felt by students and parents who had entrusted their children to him as a teacher and headteacher.
Despite being considered a respected member of the community, Brumby was described by Conley as selfish and lacking remorse for his actions. The court heard that Brumby denied all charges, forcing the victim to testify about the abuse she endured as a young child. The prosecutor emphasized the vulnerability of the victim at the time of the abuse.
Brumby’s offenses spanned several years, starting when the victim was around five or six years old. The victim’s inability to provide specific details due to the passage of time was noted during the trial. Brumby’s attempt to discredit the victim’s mental state was dismissed by the judge for lacking evidence.
Previously known as a successful “super-head” in education, Brumby faced accusations of severe psychological harm inflicted on the victim. Conley labeled Brumby’s behavior as selfish and damaging, resulting in a trail of devastation. The sentence handed down was 16 years in prison, with an additional year on extended licence, and Brumby will not be eligible for parole until over a decade into his term.
