-

Drivers were advised to anticipate travel disruptions on a busy motorway following an accident earlier today. Emergency services quickly responded to the crash on the M1 in Leicestershire, leading to a closure of the motorway in both directions between Lutterworth and Leicester. Fire crews and an air ambulance were dispatched to the scene around 12:20 pm, causing traffic delays on the motorway approach.

The National Highways has confirmed the reopening of all lanes on the M1. The northbound section has been reopened as well, as reported by AA Traffic Maps. Traffic congestion resulting from an earlier crash on the M1 Northbound from J20 A4303 (Lutterworth) to J21 M69 (Leicester) has significantly improved. The northbound carriageway reopened at approximately 6:10 pm, with the southbound carriageway following suit at around 2:40 pm. Initial traffic holdups began at 12:15 pm.

The closure of the M1 this afternoon has led to heavy traffic on surrounding roads, with queues extending up to 11 miles towards J21 from the M69, according to Google Maps.

As per National Highways, the M1 in Leicestershire remains shut northbound between J20 (Lutterworth) and J21 (M69, Leicester) due to a serious collision. While the southbound lanes have been reopened, collision investigations are ongoing. Leicestershire Police reported that the crash involved two vehicles, resulting in one driver being hospitalized for injuries.

Motorists are advised to steer clear of the area as investigations continue. Traffic cameras have captured the significant delays caused by the accident, with images showing multiple vehicles at a standstill. Expect traffic congestion around Fosse Park and on the M69, prompting drivers to allocate extra travel time. Emergency services are actively managing the situation, and drivers are urged to avoid the affected areas.
