Andrew Baker is set to take over as the new president and CEO of Alpine Canada, succeeding Therese Brisson, who has moved on to lead Skate Canada after six years. With a background of 21 years at the Canadian Olympic Committee, most recently as the COC’s chief external affairs officer, Baker will join Alpine Canada in September.
Alpine Canada, responsible for alpine and Para alpine racing and ski cross, manages around 15,000 registered racers and 5,500 coaches in 200 clubs nationwide. The organization’s 2025 annual report indicates its extensive reach within the country. Additionally, Alpine Canada hosts international World Cup races in Canada.
Upcoming events include women’s giant slaloms in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, and a World Cup ski cross in Craigleith, Ontario. Baker’s arrival at Alpine Canada marks the beginning of a new Olympic cycle leading up to the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps.
Having played a crucial role in advocating for increased core funding for national sport organizations, Baker is enthusiastic about the future of sports in Canada. The federal government’s recent commitment of $755 million over five years to high-performance sport, with a subsequent annual allocation of $118 million, includes significant funding for organizations like Alpine Canada.
Reflecting on past achievements and future goals, Baker expressed excitement about the potential for growth and success in alpine, ski cross, and Para alpine disciplines. Despite Canada’s medal shutout in alpine skiing and ski cross at the Milan Cortina Games, Baker remains optimistic about the ongoing success of Canadian athletes and the continuous improvement needed for future competitions.
Looking ahead to 2030, discussions are ongoing regarding the return of men’s speed races in the West Coast, aiming to maintain Canada’s presence in international skiing events. With additional government funding allocated for hosting international sports events and upgrading training centers, Alpine Canada is gearing up to support its athletes on the road to the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps.
