“Birmingham Christmas Markets: Crowded and Rainy Reality Check”

-

Birmingham’s Christmas Markets are widely known for their appeal, frequently featured on social media. When my university friend and I planned a rendezvous, we opted for Birmingham due to its central location between my hometown, Manchester, and her residence in Cardiff. To my surprise, Birmingham proved even busier and rainier than Manchester, a city notorious for its bustling and rainy conditions.

The train journey itself hinted at the crowded atmosphere awaiting us, with passengers squeezed into the aisles, nearly on top of each other. Throughout our visit, relentless rain hindered our exploration of the market stalls, exacerbating the already overwhelming crowds, reminiscent only of London, our nation’s capital.

Navigating through the throngs of people around the stalls resembled sardines packed in a tin, while access to the Bull Ring shopping center was virtually impossible. Anticipating a more relaxed experience based on TikTok videos showcasing the markets, we were disappointed by the reality of the bustling daytime scene.

Despite the charming stalls exuding a festive vibe, finding respite from the rain proved challenging, as every sheltered bar was packed to capacity. My first taste of Bratwurst failed to impress, leading me to swiftly discard it. Even securing a spot for lunch required a lengthy search, with popular eateries like Bill’s sporting lengthy queues.

The relentless rain left me resembling a drowned rat, my hair uncontrollably frizzing in all directions, abandoning any hope of maintaining a stylish appearance. Furthermore, my Uggs leaked dye onto my socks after numerous encounters with puddles, creating an unpleasant experience accentuated by the inclement weather.

While weather conditions are beyond anyone’s control, the overwhelming crowds in Birmingham left me genuinely astounded. Is this the norm? My friend faced travel disruptions, with her train from Cardiff canceled, necessitating a two-hour drive to join me.

As my friend battled through traffic delays, I leisurely awaited my train, delayed in typical English fashion. Despite the inconvenience, I remained unperturbed, engrossed in my book. However, receiving my friend’s message detailing her prolonged traffic ordeal in Birmingham city center evoked a sense of dread.

Despite the chaotic day, the company of my university friend added a touch of joy to the experience, making our catch-up truly enjoyable. The warmth of a hot shower upon my return was a comforting relief from the cold and damp conditions, leaving me shivering. Perhaps my next visit to Birmingham should avoid the Christmas market period altogether.
