Fabio Wardley has clinched the title of heavyweight world champion as Oleksandr Usyk decided to vacate his belt.
In a thrilling match last month, Wardley defeated Joseph Parker in the 11th round, claiming the interim WBO champion title. Usyk, who was mandated to defend his four belts against Wardley, chose not to face the British boxer for the ninth time.
Having previously held the undisputed world champion title twice after victories against Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois, Usyk had initially planned to retire after one more fight. However, he recently disclosed his intention to continue boxing for another two years. Wardley’s journey to becoming a world champion is remarkable, starting his career in the white-collar boxing scene with no amateur background but achieving success in the professional arena since 2017.
With an impressive record of 20 wins, one draw, and zero losses, including 19 knockouts, Wardley has triumphed over notable opponents like Justis Huni, David Adeleye, Nick Gorman, and Nick Webb. The only blemish on his record is a draw against Frazer Clarke, which Wardley avenged with a first-round TKO in their rematch last year.
Despite his eagerness to face Usyk, Wardley did not need to fight the current champion to realize his dream of becoming a world champion. This marks the second time Usyk has relinquished a belt, having previously given up his IBF title to face Tyson Fury in a rematch instead of defending against Dubois.
As Wardley celebrates his new status as the WBO heavyweight champion, his promoter Frank Warren expressed pride in the fighter’s accomplishments, foreseeing exciting fights ahead as Wardley defends his WBO belt and leaves a lasting legacy in the sport.
