“Father Convicted of Murder and Child Abuse in Baby’s Tragic Death”

-

A man in North Carolina has been convicted of second-degree murder and severe child abuse in the tragic death of his 12-week-old daughter in 2022. The father, Nicholas Shane Stephenson, 37, faces a minimum of 27 years in prison.

Prosecutors accused Stephenson of subjecting his baby girl, Riley, to torture, abuse, neglect, and starvation, resulting in her skin becoming loose on her body.

Superior Court Judge George Bell imposed a prison sentence of 200 to 252 months for murder and an additional 125 to 162 months for the child abuse conviction on Stephenson.

Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams expressed gratitude to the jury for holding Stephenson accountable for the heartless cruelty inflicted on the innocent child.

Riley’s mother, Diandra Fuhr-Farlow, previously confessed to serious child abuse. She initially faced a first-degree murder charge and testified against Stephenson during the trial.

Stephenson was originally charged with first-degree murder but was found guilty of the lesser offense of second-degree murder.

Authorities responded to a distress call on June 28, 2022, reporting an unresponsive infant in Candler, southwest of Asheville. Little Riley had visible injuries, including bruises and burns on her face, and was pronounced dead later that day at a nearby hospital.

Medical reports revealed that Riley had suffered multiple injuries, including broken bones, burns, and signs of dehydration.

Fuhr-Farlow claimed initially that the injuries were accidental, but later alleged that Stephenson had caused the injuries through deliberate acts of violence against Riley.

Both Stephenson and Fuhr-Farlow faced charges related to the child’s death, which were later upgraded to first-degree murder charges.

The medical examiner’s report highlighted Riley’s severe malnutrition and lack of medication at the time of her death. The investigation revealed a distressing pattern of abuse and neglect leading to the tragic outcome.
