Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the study analyzed data from over 12 million death certificates, focusing on cancer types linked to radiation exposure. Flight attendants were found to have the highest percentage of deaths from radiation-related cancers, followed by pilots. The study indicated elevated odds of dying for each type of radiation-related cancer among these occupational groups.
The study authors noted that neither flight attendants nor pilots showed increased death rates from cancers not linked to radiation exposure, suggesting that occupational radiation exposure plays a significant role. The research challenged the belief that excess skin cancer risk among flight crews stems from sunny layovers, emphasizing the potential radiation exposure within the cockpit environment.
Flight attendants had approximately 50% higher odds of dying from radiation-related cancers than the general working population, while pilots had about 36% higher odds. Despite some study limitations, including uncertainty about precise exposure levels and possible misclassification of occupations, the findings underscore the need for heightened awareness and monitoring of radiation risks in the aviation industry.
The study also highlighted the impact of circadian disruption on cancer risk, emphasizing the importance of addressing occupational health risks among flight personnel.
